Old Dreams Fueling New Endeavors

Jennifer Oechsner

OLD DREAMS CAN FUEL NEW ENDEAVORS

For better or worse I have spent most of my adult life following a less than traditional path.  From the time I was in college I have been driven by exploration and inclined to follow my heart. Much to the dismay of my parents at times; my dreams were never tied to planting roots, owning a home or pursuit of a career that would make me rich. In my twenties I changed career paths and again in my thirties. And now in my forties, I'm on the path to another. I have lived in 4 countries and spent time wandering in 20 more. This has come at the expense of some self-imposed hardship and a lonely existence at times but overall I am deeply grateful for  the life I have chosen.

The time I have spent wandering the earth over the years has given me so many cherished memories. From the time I was a young girl I was fascinated by the world. Before I could even begin to fathom where life would take me I would spin the globe in wonder. My young naive mind was filled with questions...Why would a pace be called Turkey? What were all these places with unpronounceable names inside of the immense land mass of Africa? What did houses look like on these tiny dots surrounded by a seemingly endless expanse of blue.  Were these places like my home?  What I viewed as the exotic culture of the far eastern lands of places like Vietnam, India, China and Japan seemed to be the focal point of my fascination.

I have long had a thirst to see the world; I now know this thirst can only be quenched by more exploration. There was a time that I felt pressure to get this out of my system; like it was a youthful frivolous affliction to rid myself of. With time I came to understand that my passion for travel and to understand the people I share this crazy world was not an affliction but rather a part of my soul.  Twenty-four countries later; the world seems smaller somehow but other times bigger than I can fathom.

Each place I have wandered has left an imprint on my heart. Some certainly more than others. When I travel I love finding beautiful treasures to bring small pieces of these places home with me. My jewelry box and closet are a jumble of items I have collected over the years. Deities, paintings and knick knacks are scattered throughout my home; daily reminders of the places I have had the joy of wandering.

My newest business, Silk Road Imports, was born from this passion, this wanderlust. For many years I had thought it would be a fun endeavor to bring back things from my travels to sell. Not simply to sell stuff, but to give people access to small pieces of places that have become a part of my heart. My time living in India gave me the missing link I needed to start bringing this dream to fruition. What started as finding a tailor to make some items from beautiful fabric I came across in Jaipur evolved into the start of this dream becoming a reality.

I love buying clothes when I travel and silky soft fabrics When I traveled to Asia I fell in love with so many beautiful pieces and the fabric markets in India are like a dream for me. Through Silk Road Imports you can get a taste of this beauty from India, and down the road , from other places as well. And who knows maybe one of my treasures will inspire you to wander just a little bit more.

I shared my story with you all here to promote my new endeavor, but also to encourage you to follow your dreams. What dreams sit in the back drawer waiting to have the dust shaken off? What visions danced in your young mind that maybe, just maybe could be re-visited? I hope you love what I have to offer and I hope my story inspires you to keep dreaming.
